Keeping Your Home Cool in the Myrtle Beach Summer

Summer isn’t over yet – in fact, the average temperature in August is a toasty 89 degrees! As temperatures continue to rise in Myrtle Beach, rising energy costs follow.

Here are 6 ways you can keep your home cool this summer without overworking your HVAC system and raising energy costs.

1. Use a Programmable or Smart Thermostat

With a programmable or smart thermostat, you can schedule your home’s temperature based on your habits and preferences. For instance, you can schedule the temperature to be a few degrees higher when you are out during the day and bring it back down before you get home.

Many smart thermostats also allow remote monitoring, so you can adjust the temperature on your phone even if you aren’t home.

2. Close Curtains and Blinds During the Day

Sunlight streaming into your windows may look pleasant, but it heats up your home quickly. Keep your blinds closed or invest in blackout curtains to block out the heat, especially in the south- and west-facing windows. You'll be surprised at the difference!

3. Use Your Ceiling Fans

Contrary to belief, ceiling fans don't lower the temperature in your home. However, they do help circulate air which makes you feel cooler without raising the thermostat. To ensure cool air is pushed downwards, make sure your fan spins counterclockwise.

4. Avoid Running Appliances During the Day

Appliances like stoves, ovens, dryers, and dishwashers produce a lot of heat. To help keep your home cool, avoid doing these chores during peak summer hours. Instead, save laundry and cooking for early in the morning or after the sun goes down. Better yet, take cooking outdoors entirely by grilling!

5. Seal Any Leaks or Drafts

Gaps between windows and doors can steal the cold air you are trying to conserve. Seal these areas with weather stripping, caulk, or foam to keep the cool air in.

6. Call CTC for Maintenance
